Shamus Van Riezen, the founder of VR Accounting Services, is a Chartered Professional Accountant. He specializes in providing part-time controllership services to the manufacturing and distribution sectors.
Before starting his business, he worked a demanding, corporate job on Bay Street in Toronto as a Public Accountant. His role was to provide assurance services primarily for mid-to-large sized businesses from various industries including; distribution, real estate development, investment and asset management, and insurance brokers.
In 2014, he returned home to Hamilton after falling ill. It was a scary journey for Van Riezen as he discovered he has Coeliac disease. This caused him to lose a lot of energy and he feared that he wouldn’t be able to work at the level he was before. But, everything happens for a reason. If he hadn’t experienced this trial, he may have never came back to Hamilton to operate his own accounting services business.
He strongly believes in investing both time and resources in the local community. As such, he sits on the board of two not-for-profit organizations and provides mentorship to those who aspire to become accountants.
If you are an aspiring or current entrepreneur, listen to hear the advice he shared at the 18th Generation Z Hamilton networking event, on how you can start a business without going into debt.
